The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has been directed to proceed with the conduct of local government elections across the state.
An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo issued the order on Friday, February 21, 2025, ahead of the elections originally scheduled for Saturday, February 22.
The ruling followed a case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against OSIEC and its chairman, Hashim Abioye.
Delivering the judgment, Justice A. Aderigbigbe affirmed that there were existing vacancies across the 30 local government areas in Osun, as earlier declared by the Federal High Court.
The judge noted that the local government election conducted by OSIEC in 2022 had been nullified, and all officials elected in that process had been removed by the court in a case between the Action Peoples Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), among others.
Recognizing the existing vacancies, the court upheld the PDP’s request and ordered OSIEC to proceed with the election.
Additionally, the court directed all security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Army, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Amotekun Corps, and local vigilante groups, to ensure adequate security throughout the electoral process.
