A fresh outbreak of violence in a long-standing boundary dispute between Ogwor and Umuobor villages in Ivo Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi State has resulted in the death of four people.
The two communities have been locked in a conflict over a piece of land known as ‘Elueke.’ In January, the Ebonyi State government designated the disputed land as a “buffer zone” and prohibited both parties from accessing it.
Confirming the latest killings on Thursday in Abakaliki, Chinasa Okorie, the Coordinator of Akaeze Development Centre, condemned the incident, describing it as “wicked.”
“Among those killed, three were reportedly part of a group that entered the disputed land to harvest yams on Wednesday, while a woman was killed earlier on Monday,” Okorie stated.
He urged both communities to maintain peace and respect the government’s directive.
“The government has declared this land a buffer zone, meaning no one is permitted to enter it,” he reiterated.
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command provided a different account of the fatalities. According to police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu, the command is only aware of one death.
“We have confirmed the killing of a woman on February 17. That is the information available to us at this time. However, investigations are ongoing, and security personnel have been deployed to the area,” Ukandu said.
