Despite the backlash and outcry by Nigerians on the dangers involved in CNG vehicles, Delta State Government has entered into a partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited to set up a facility for converting petrol-powered vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing this collaboration was signed yesterday in Asaba.
Representing the state government at the signing ceremony were the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu; Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure; and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN. On behalf of NIPCO Gas Limited, Mr. Sanjay Tarat signed the agreement.
Dr. Emu emphasized that this initiative aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s vision to promote cleaner energy alternatives by providing residents with a facility to convert their vehicles to CNG.
He highlighted the state’s commitment to ensuring efficiency and quality by allocating a 3,000-square-meter site in Asaba for the project.
Underscoring the importance of meeting deadlines, Emu cautioned that the government would revoke the agreement if NIPCO Gas failed to deliver on its commitments.
He noted that Governor Oborevwori has been proactive in adopting eco-friendly transportation solutions, being among the few state leaders to use electric and CNG-powered vehicles.
“This conversion initiative is essential,” Emu stated. “Before we start bringing in vehicles, we must establish the necessary infrastructure.
“Without functional CNG stations, progress is impossible.”
He urged NIPCO Gas to adhere to agreed timelines, citing the governor’s reputation for ensuring timely and high-quality projects.
He added, “The government has fulfilled its part by providing the space, and now the responsibility lies with you.”
