Delta govt demotes engineers for approving incomplete road projects

The Delta State Government has sanctioned two engineers in the state civil service for issuing completion certificates for road projects that were not fully executed.

The affected officials, Gabriel Evuarhere and Samuel Nwokolobia, have been demoted in rank—Evuarhere from deputy director to assistant director, and Nwokolobia from assistant director to chief engineer.

In a statement issued on Friday in Asaba, the state’s Head of Service, William Ogolokpe, explained that their next promotions to deputy director and assistant director would now take effect from January 1, 2028, and January 1, 2027, respectively.

According to their letters of demotion, both officers were found guilty of corruption, dishonesty, and failure to follow established procedures. The disciplinary action took effect from January 1, 2024.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori intervened in the matter by requesting leniency, leading to a reduction in their ranks instead of outright dismissal. He emphasized that accountability remains a top priority in his administration and warned that future offenders would face stricter consequences.
