Anambra: Escaped prisoners not principal suspects who killed lawmaker – Police

Must read

The Anambra State Police Command has clarified that the two suspects who recently escaped from custody were not the main culprits in the killing of state lawmaker, Justice Azuka.

The escape, which triggered widespread criticism, led to speculation that some officers might have facilitated their getaway.

Addressing the issue in a press conference on Friday, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, stated that the incident occurred before he assumed office and provided details of the circumstances.

“When I took over, I committed to transparency, and that is why I am addressing this issue. The escape happened two days before I arrived.

“There has been a lot of speculation, which is understandable in a democratic society, but it is important to set the record straight,” Orutugu said.

According to his findings, the incident took place on February 8 in Obosi.

The escapees, Ikemefuna Ossai and Chinedu Okoli were among 11 individuals who had been arrested and paraded after confessing to involvement in the crime.

However, he emphasized that they were not the primary suspects but rather drivers who transported the main culprits.

Explaining the circumstances of their escape, Orutugu revealed that the two were assisting in the arrest of another suspect, Tochukwu Okolisa, who was allegedly in possession of the slain lawmaker’s vehicle and belongings.

In a bid to lure him, the suspects were allowed to drive and pretend they had another car for sale.

However, during the operation, they took advantage of the situation, abandoned the vehicle, and fled into the bush.

Despite their escape, the police chief assured the public that efforts were underway to recapture them.

He also reassured residents that the principal suspects remained in custody and that there was no cause for alarm.
