Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has accused court-sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councillors of attempting to illegally reoccupy local government secretariats, despite a court ruling that removed them from office.
In a state broadcast from the Government House on February 20, 2025, Governor Adeleke condemned the actions of the ousted officials, describing their takeover as unlawful and a threat to peace in the state.
He expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and those injured during the incident, emphasizing that adherence to the rule of law is the only path to lasting peace.
“I particularly appreciate and commend our people for complying with my directives to stay away from local government secretariats.
“The compliance saved our state from further confrontations and casualties,” Adeleke stated.
He urged residents to continue exercising restraint to prevent further escalation of tensions.
The governor reiterated that there was no legal basis for the APC officials’ actions, as the judgment that removed them from office remains valid.
He dismissed their claims of a reinstatement order, stating that his administration had reviewed the court ruling with legal experts and found no directive for their return.
“If you have a genuine court order, follow the court enforcement protocols. The Nigerian judiciary has its enforcement procedure, which everyone must follow,” Adeleke said, warning that self-help is illegal and would not be tolerated.
Despite the defiance of the sacked officials, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and allowing the judiciary to resolve the dispute.
He also expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to democratic principles, stating that the federal government would not support any unlawful actions.
As Osun State prepares for local government elections on February 22, 2025, Governor Adeleke urged registered voters to turn out peacefully and participate in the democratic process.
“Osun State remains truly peaceful,” he declared, calling on residents to maintain order and continue supporting the government’s efforts to promote stability and development.
