The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has withdrawn from the local government election scheduled for Saturday, February 22, citing a recent Court of Appeal ruling.
In a letter dated February 17 and signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Alao Kamorudeen, the APC formally notified the State Independent Electoral Commission of its decision.
The letter, obtained on Thursday by the News Agency of Nigeria, explained that the withdrawal was based on the February 10 Court of Appeal verdict, which reinstated the party’s previously sacked chairmen and councillors.
The APC argued that the ruling nullified an earlier Federal High Court decision, effectively restoring its elected officers to their positions.
As a result, the party declared the election unnecessary and unlawful, since the local government seats were no longer vacant.
The Court of Appeal judgment has fueled tensions between the APC and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
While the PDP maintained that the ruling did not reinstate the sacked officials, the APC insisted on their return to office.
The dispute escalated on Monday, with both parties clashing over control of local government secretariats across the state. The violence resulted in six deaths and multiple injuries, according to the police.
