A Research Director at the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Engr. Dr. Samuel Olugbenga O. Olusunle, has been conferred with the prestigious Fellow of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (FNMGS).
According to the agency’s Director of Information, Olusegun Ayeoyenikan, the recognition places him among distinguished professionals in one of Nigeria’s oldest and most respected professional bodies.
The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), which was established in 1961 and officially inaugurated in 1962, held its 60th Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE) from February 16 to 19, 2025, at the Chida International Hotel, Abuja.
The conference concluded with an Awards Night, where Dr. Olusunle and 42 other professionals were honored with the society’s highest membership category—Fellow.
The NMGS, which succeeded the Nigerian Mining Geological and Metallurgical Society (NMGMS) in 1977, has played a significant role in advancing mining, earth sciences, and metallurgy in Nigeria.
Its objectives include knowledge dissemination, professional ethics enforcement, and statutory representation in the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG).
The organization also publishes journals, periodicals, and specialized books to support research and professional development in the sector.
Expressing gratitude for the honor, Dr. Olusunle stated that he was humbled by the recognition and emphasized the alignment between NASENI’s mandate and NMGS’s core objectives.
He noted that NASENI, under the leadership of Executive Vice Chairman/CEO Khalil S. Halilu, has been actively involved in initiatives such as the Solid Minerals Machinery and Equipment Development Institute (SOMMEDI) and the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) project, which present opportunities for collaboration between the agency and NMGS.
Dr. Olusunle has had a distinguished career, previously serving as Managing Director of the Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI) in Akure, a key NASENI development institute.
He is also a Fellow of several other prestigious organizations, including the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), the Materials Science and Technology Society of Nigeria (MSN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS).
The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society continues to uphold its tradition of recognizing professionals whose contributions have significantly impacted Nigeria’s mining and geosciences sectors, as well as the broader socio-economic landscape.
