Ademola Lookman has responded strongly to Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s criticism following the club’s UEFA Champions League exit, calling the coach’s comments “deeply disrespectful.”
The fallout began after Atalanta suffered a 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge on February 18, crashing out of the tournament with a 5-2 aggregate loss.
Lookman, who returned from injury, scored for his side after coming on as a halftime substitute.
However, he missed a crucial penalty in the 61st minute—a moment that became the centre of post-match controversy.
Gasperini, in his post-game remarks, singled out Lookman for criticism, stating that the Nigerian forward was “one of the worst penalty takers” he had ever seen and was not meant to take the spot-kick.
His comments sparked outrage among fans and analysts, with many questioning his public rebuke of the player.
Lookman took to social media to address the issue, defending himself and expressing disappointment in his coach’s remarks.
“The comments made by Gasperini were deeply disrespectful. I have always given my best for Atalanta, and I will continue to do so,” Lookman stated.
He clarified that he stepped up for the penalty following instructions from the designated taker, countering Gasperini’s claims.
The tension between Lookman and Gasperini has raised concerns over the winger’s future at Atalanta, with speculation mounting that he may seek an exit from the club.
Meanwhile, Atalanta will have to refocus on domestic competitions after their European campaign ended in disappointment.
