JUST IN: Lokoja varsity shuts down indefinitely after students’ deaths, protests

The Federal University, Lokoja, has been indefinitely closed following the tragic loss of five students in a trailer accident at the Felele city centre on Monday, February 17, 2025.

The university management made the decision amid rising tensions, particularly after students staged a protest on Wednesday, blocking the institution’s gates in response to the fatal incident.

In an official circular released on Thursday, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Rebecca Okojie, explained that the closure was necessary to maintain order and prevent further unrest.

“Despite interventions from the state government and repeated pleas for calm, tensions remain high,” the statement read.

“Based on recommendations from security agencies and in a bid to prevent further casualties, the Vice-Chancellor, after due consultation with the management, has directed—on behalf of the Senate—that both campuses of the university be closed indefinitely.”

Students were given until 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025, to vacate the school premises.
