Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has revoked several traditional titles, including those held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Boni Haruna, and himself.
The decision is part of a broad restructuring of emirates and chiefdoms across the state.
Speaking at the coronation of the newly installed Chief of Madagali, Governor Fintiri explained that the reorganization was necessary to modernize the traditional system and ensure district heads align with the newly established emirates and chiefdoms.
“As a result of this restructuring, all traditional titles granted under the previous emirate and chiefdom arrangements are now invalid. The newly formed traditional councils are directed to propose fresh titles for approval in accordance with statutory guidelines,” he stated.
The restructuring primarily affects titles conferred under the Adamawa and Mubi emirates. Among those impacted, Governor Fintiri has relinquished his title as Sarki Yaki Mubi, Atiku Abubakar has been stripped of his Waziri Adamawa title, and Boni Haruna has lost his position as Makama Mubi. Several other prominent individuals have also been affected.
Since the newly created emirates and chiefdoms were carved out from the Adamawa and Mubi emirates, the governor emphasized the need for a fresh approach to traditional leadership, including the reassignment of titles to reflect the updated structure.
To ensure a smooth transition, Fintiri instructed the traditional councils of the restructured emirates to submit recommendations for new titles, which will be carefully reviewed before approval.
He further clarified that the Lamido of Adamawa, as the state’s paramount traditional ruler, may propose names—including Atiku Abubakar and Boni Haruna—for reconsideration. However, any reinstatements or new appointments will require final approval from the state government.
