The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that two suspects detained in connection with the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, the lawmaker representing Onitsha 1 Constituency, have escaped from custody.
Hon. Azuka, who was elected under the Labour Party (LP), was abducted on Ugwunankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha.
His decomposing body was discovered 40 days later on the 2nd Niger Bridge. He was laid to rest over the weekend in Onitsha, with mourners expressing deep sorrow over his tragic death.
Speaking on the escape, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the police had launched an intensive manhunt for the fugitives and that officers responsible for the lapse would be held accountable.
Following the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu’s directives, security operatives have been mobilized to track down the escaped suspects.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo fled while assisting officers in an operation to capture a suspected receiver of stolen goods and recover vehicles linked to the crime.
While the receiver was arrested, and two stolen vehicles retrieved, the suspects managed to escape.
The Commissioner of Police reassured the public that efforts were ongoing to rearrest the fugitives and ensure justice is served.
