A nominee for the position of Commissioner in Akwanga Local Government Area, Yakubu Kwanta, has formally submitted a written apology to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) following a setback in his screening process.
A reliable source confirmed that Kwanta sent the letter on Monday, February 17, just hours after the Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Danladi Jatau, suspended his screening over allegations of insubordination.
AFRIPOST had reported how the issue stemmed from Kwanta’s previous tenure as Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources.
Kwanta failed to respond to an invitation from the House Committee on Environment.
Lawmakers had summoned him to defend the 2024 budget for his ministry, but his absence was viewed as a serious act of disregard for legislative authority.
Chairman of the committee, Adamu Omadefu, criticized Kwanta’s actions, emphasizing that such conduct was unacceptable, especially from an official who had been screened and confirmed twice before.
To maintain the Assembly’s credibility, Kwanta was instructed to submit a formal apology before his nomination could be reconsidered.
Meanwhile, the screening process for other nominees has continued in the State Assembly’s Hallowed Chamber.
As of Monday, seven out of the 16 candidates recommended by Governor Abdullahi Sule for positions in the State Executive Council had been vetted.
