A gunpowder explosion at the Talata Mafara market in Zamfara State on Tuesday claimed at least five lives and left many others injured.
The blast, which occurred around 3:45 p.m., disrupted activities at the bustling weekly market.
An Eyewitness revealed that the explosion originated near a blacksmith’s shop within the market.
Speaking, he said, “The explosion happened at the blacksmith’s tent. I was fortunate to have left the area just moments before it occurred.
“Suddenly, there was a loud bang, followed by a fire outbreak,” he recounted.
He further revealed that five charred bodies had been recovered, while more than 50 people sustained various degrees of injuries.
The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Talata Mafara General Hospital.
Meanwhile, confirming the incident, the Zamfara Police Command said more than 25 people suffered burns and were immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention.
