Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda has resigned from her position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after just 38 days in office.
As reported by Business Day, her resignation comes barely two days after lawmakers expressed confidence in her leadership. The Lagos Assembly has been facing internal tensions following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Recalled that on Monday morning, Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was unable to enter her office as speculation about her possible resignation gained momentum.
Security operatives had sealed off the speaker’s office before dawn, with police and task force personnel patrolling the assembly complex to maintain order.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Meranda arrived at the assembly to cheers from lawmakers and staff, who chanted, “Madam Speaker… Madam Speaker.” She responded with a smile and a determined expression while making her way around the premises, accompanied by her security team.
Meranda made history on January 13, 2025, when she became the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa.
At the time of his removal, Obasa was outside the country. His impeachment also led to the dissolution of all principal positions and committees within the assembly.
Upon his return, Obasa challenged his removal, arguing that due process was not followed and insisting that he remained the legitimate Speaker.
