In response to the ongoing political unrest in Osun State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of more tactical units to bolster security efforts and restore order across the state.
The additional units are tasked with supporting the existing security forces in the region.
This move comes after violent clashes on Tuesday at various local government secretariats, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a reinstated local government chairman.
In a statement issued from Osogbo by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP condemned the violence, describing it as a serious threat to peace and stability in the state.
“I strongly condemn the events that have destabilized the peace of Osun State,” Egbetokun remarked. “The violence has not only caused the destruction of properties but also resulted in the tragic loss of lives. Those responsible for these crimes will face justice.”
To address the situation, the IGP has instructed the deployment of additional tactical units to reinforce law enforcement efforts.
“The police understand that violence undermines democracy and threatens the safety of citizens,” the statement continued. “We are committed to ensuring that those behind these acts of violence are held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
The IGP also issued a firm warning to individuals inciting unrest, stressing that the Force would not tolerate any form of lawlessness or anarchy in Osun.
“Those responsible for these criminal acts will be apprehended and made to face the consequences,” he stated.
He urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the security agencies are working diligently to restore normalcy. Egbetokun also reassured the people of Osun, as well as local leaders and stakeholders, of the police’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The IGP reminded political leaders that the judiciary is the final authority in electoral matters and urged all parties to respect its decisions.
“We are committed to ensuring that peace prevails in Osun, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely,” he concluded. “Any attempts to disrupt law and order will be met with swift action.”
