NLC orders local council workers to strike amid political tension in Osun

Must read

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members working in local councils to halt their duties starting Monday, February 17.

This move follows escalating political tensions linked to a recent Court of Appeal ruling.

Christopher Arapasopo, the NLC chair in Osun, clarified that while the union remains neutral in politics, it will not permit its members to operate in an unsafe environment.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law and called on all political entities to respect legal frameworks to avoid chaos.

“The safety of our members is paramount, and we will not allow them to resume work until their security is guaranteed, as it is their constitutional right,” said Arapasopo.

The directive comes in the wake of a controversial ruling by the Court of Appeal in Akure, which addressed the removal of council chairpersons and councillors from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC claimed the decision reinstated the officials dismissed by the Federal High Court in Osogbo in 2022.

However, both the Osun State government and the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) disagreed, asserting that the judgment did not restore the ousted officials. They confirmed that new local government elections are set for Saturday.
