ESUT suspends lecturers, class representative over alleged extortion

Must read

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has indefinitely suspended four lecturers and a class representative over allegations of extorting students for grade enhancements, commonly referred to as “sorting.”

The affected individuals are affiliated with the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM).

According to the university’s Registrar, Ambrose Ugwu, the disciplinary action follows accusations that the lecturers conspired with class representatives to solicit money from students in exchange for improved academic results.

Speaking to journalists, Ugwu explained that the class representatives acted as intermediaries, collecting payments on behalf of the lecturers after exams had been marked.

Although the registrar did not disclose the identities of those suspended, he mentioned that further details might be released as the investigation progresses.

“In the College of Medicine, we have sanctioned four lecturers for demanding payments to upgrade students’ results.

Some class representatives have been facilitating these transactions by gathering money from students after exams,” Ugwu stated.

This move follows ESUT’s dismissal of six lecturers in August 2024 for offences including certificate forgery, sexual harassment, and grade manipulation.

The university’s actions underscore its commitment to upholding academic integrity and ethical standards.
