The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has declared a two-day mourning period in honor of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the late leader of Afenifere, who passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
In a statement issued by its Deputy President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group announced that the mourning period would be observed for two traditional Igbo market days, in accordance with cultural customs.
This decision, the statement noted, is a tribute to Adebanjo’s enduring legacy as a champion of justice, unity, and good governance.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo deeply mourns the passing of Pa Ayodele Samuel Adebanjo, a true elder statesman who stood for fairness, equity, and national unity. His unwavering support for the Igbo people and his lifelong commitment to interethnic harmony will forever be remembered,” the statement read.
Isiguzoro highlighted Adebanjo’s pivotal role in fostering stronger ties between different ethnic groups in Nigeria, particularly through his involvement in the Middle Belt–Southern Nigerian Forum. He described the late Afenifere leader as a man of integrity who prioritized justice over tribal sentiments.
The statement also acknowledged Adebanjo’s strong backing of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as a reflection of his belief in a fairer and more inclusive Nigeria.
As part of its tribute, Ohanaeze pledged to actively participate in all funeral rites honoring Adebanjo and extended its solidarity to the Yoruba community during this period of mourning.
“On behalf of the Igbo people at home and in the diaspora, we express our heartfelt condolences to the Adebanjo family, Afenifere, the Oduduwa Nation, and the leaders of the Southwest. May his soul rest in peace,” Isiguzoro concluded.
