The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has announced that Ramadan 1446 AH (2025) will begin on Saturday, March 1, independent of the traditional declaration by the Sultan of Sokoto.
The group stated that its decision was based on astronomical calculations and resolutions from international Islamic conferences on lunar sightings.
In a communiqué issued on Friday, the League referenced scholarly opinions from Islamic jurisprudential councils and findings from gatherings in Istanbul, Paris, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
According to the League, precise astronomical data confirm that the new moon will be visible after sunset on February 28, marking the start of Ramadan.
Citing a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad, which states, “Fast when you see the crescent and break your fast when you see it,” the League justified its stance, arguing that Yoruba Muslims have no religious obligation to follow the Sultan’s declaration.
The statement, signed by the group’s leader, Banji Akintoye, further emphasized that the decision aligns with global Islamic standards and scientific observations.
According to the League, the first Taraweeh prayer will be held on Friday night, February 28, as the fasting period officially begins the next day.
