Veteran nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96.
He peacefully departed on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos State.
His family confirmed the news in a statement released on Friday, saying, “He passed away peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki residence in Lagos at the age of 96.”
Chief Adebanjo, a distinguished lawyer and former organising secretary of the Action Group, also served as the national leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Paying tribute to his legacy, the family stated, “His dedication to truth, justice, and a progressive Nigeria remained unwavering throughout his lifetime. He fought for these ideals until his last breath.”
Discussions are currently ongoing with his associates and key figures to plan a fitting farewell. The details of his funeral will be announced in due course.
Condolence registers have been placed at his Lekki residence and his hometown in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The statement was signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo on behalf of the family.
