MTN Nigeria apologizes for data price hike, calls it a mistake

Must read

MTN Nigeria has issued an apology for its decision to increase the price of its 15GB weekly data bundle by 200 percent.

The telecom giant initially raised the cost of the plan from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 as part of a broader tariff adjustment. However, following widespread backlash from customers, MTN admitted the move was an error.

In a statement addressing affected users, the company acknowledged their frustration.

“To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, we know you’re upset,” the message read. “We could give various explanations, but the truth is, we made a mistake.”

The company appealed for forgiveness, emphasizing its commitment to customers. “This is the season of love—don’t stay angry with us. You matter to us, and we will always show it.”

MTN’s price adjustments came after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff review for telecom operators—the first official revision since 2013.

However, the increase occurred despite a directive from the House of Representatives instructing the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to halt the proposed 50 percent tariff hike.
