Kano revenue service uncovers fraudulent accounts diverting public funds

Must read

The Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has exposed multiple private accounts allegedly used by individuals to siphon public funds.

The agency also revealed that billions of naira had been misappropriated through these unauthorized accounts before the current leadership took charge.

KIRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Zaid Abubakar, made this known during the 2024 Yearly Performance Review and Strategic Planning session for 2025.

He highlighted the extent of financial mismanagement in the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR), noting that previous officials had underreported earnings and diverted public funds.

To address this, he outlined new strategies aimed at sealing revenue loopholes.

Although he did not disclose the exact amount lost or name those involved, Abubakar stressed that Kano had fallen behind its counterparts in revenue generation due to these irregularities.

To improve tax collection, he confirmed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had approved a review of the state’s tax laws, with implementation expected before the first quarter of 2025 ends.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser on Revenue, Prof. Ibrahim Barde, called on KIRS to tackle existing challenges hampering effective revenue collection in the state.
