Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has confirmed that plans are in motion to prevent President Bola Tinubu from securing a second term in 2027.
Lawal, who was once a close ally of Tinubu but has since become a strong critic, stated that many in the North feel betrayed by the administration’s economic policies. According to him, these policies have intensified poverty and hardship in the region, leading to widespread discontent.
He noted that there is growing consensus among northerners that Tinubu should not be given another term. “If these policies continue for another four years, northern Nigeria could face severe economic and social crises,” he warned.
Lawal also revealed that discussions are underway to find a credible alternative to Tinubu ahead of the next election. He stressed that the focus is not necessarily on regional identity but on finding a leader committed to national unity and equitable governance.
“There are different viewpoints on the ideal candidate. Some believe a southerner with a strong sense of patriotism would be best, while others insist that the North cannot afford to take that risk. However, the shared agreement is that Tinubu must be replaced,” he said.
He also took a swipe at some northern politicians, including APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, accusing them of prioritizing personal benefits over the well-being of the people. Lawal argued that despite outward expressions of loyalty from some elites, many of them privately oppose Tinubu’s re-election.
“Even if some political elites pretend to support him, they will not vote for him. They are feeling the impact of these policies just like the masses and are working to ensure he does not get a second term,” he added.
Lawal’s comments echo similar concerns raised by other politicians, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently predicted that Tinubu could face a major political setback in 2027, similar to the defeat of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
