Wike directs security agencies to monitor Almajirai influx in Abuja

Must read

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered security agencies to closely monitor the influx of almajirai and other individuals who may pose security risks in the territory.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists on the outcomes of the FCT Security Committee meeting in Abuja.

According to Disu, the minister has mandated the formation of a special committee to track and assess the movement of almajirai and suspicious persons entering the FCT.

The committee will consist of security operatives from the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Navy, State Security Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

As part of its responsibilities, the committee will collaborate with chairmen of the six area councils to identify almajiri schools, profile their operators, and evaluate the curriculum being taught.

Disu explained that the government aims to work with the school owners to determine what support they might need while ensuring the safety of the children, the schools, and the host communities.

“This initiative is a proactive measure by the FCT Administration to enhance security in the territory,” he stated, adding that the committee has been given two weeks to submit its findings to the minister.

He also revealed that a clearance operation is underway across the FCT, leading to the arrest of five individuals suspected of being security threats. Investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Disu urged FCT residents to remain vigilant and report any unfamiliar persons moving into their neighborhoods.

“Everyone should be security conscious. We need to profile people coming into our environment and ensure we know who they are,” he advised.
