The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the suspension of the Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, calling it unconstitutional and lacking due process.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP declared that the suspension violated its constitution, specifically the 2017 amended version, and held no legal standing.
“No State Working Committee has the power to suspend or take any disciplinary action against a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party without due recourse to the NWC, as clearly provided under Section 57 (7) of the PDP Constitution,” the statement read.
Wabara’s suspension had been announced by the Abia State chapter of the party following his endorsement of Governor Alex Otti for a second term, just five months into the governor’s administration in October 2023.
However, the NWC reaffirmed that, according to Section 57 (7) of the party’s constitution, only the NEC has the authority to discipline its members, including NEC officials, deputy governors, and National Assembly members.
With this clarification, the PDP maintained that the Abia State chapter lacked the authority to suspend Wabara, branding the move as unconstitutional and politically reckless.
The party further cautioned those responsible to reverse the action or risk disciplinary consequences.
