A devastating fire outbreak ravaged the business centre section of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, popularly known as community Market, on Tuesday night, February 11, 2025.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the fire started in four shops before rapidly spreading to engulf the entire business centre.
Despite the efforts of the school’s fire service, which arrived after an alarm was raised, the inferno had already destroyed numerous shops and properties before being extinguished.
The affected area of the university serves as a major commercial hub for students and staff, housing computer centres for printing and photocopying, restaurants, clothing stores, game centres, and other businesses.
Many students rely on these facilities for their academic and personal needs.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
However, authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
There were no confirmed casualties, but business owners and students have suffered significant losses.
Affected traders and students have called on the university administration for support to help rebuild the damaged businesses.
