The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost another lawmaker in the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hon. Amos Magaji, representing Jaba/Zango Kataf Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, announced his decision to leave the PDP, attributing it to the party’s ongoing internal crisis.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read Magaji’s defection letter, in which he expressed frustration over the unresolved issues within the opposition party.
“The persistent crises within the PDP, from the national level down to the state, have made it impossible for me to remain in the party,” Magaji stated.
With this move, Magaji becomes the third PDP lawmaker to defect to the APC since the 10th Assembly was inaugurated, following the earlier defections of Chris Nkwonta from Abia State and Eriatheke Ibori-Suenu from Delta State.
However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda opposed the defection, urging the Speaker to declare Magaji’s seat vacant in line with the constitutional provisions.
Citing Section 68(1g) of the Nigerian Constitution, Chinda argued that while lawmakers have the right to switch parties, the law also specifies that such a move should lead to the loss of their seat unless it results from a division within their original party.
