Over 1,000 kidnapped victims regain freedom in Katsina

Must read

The chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Area in Katsina State, Hon. Faruk Ayatu, has confirmed the release of more than 1,000 people previously held captive by bandits.

Speaking with journalists in Funtua on Monday, Ayatu noted that Sabuwa remains one of the most affected areas in the state due to its proximity to bandit strongholds along the borders of Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.

While acknowledging a decline in attacks following intensified security efforts by the state government, he expressed concern over a recent rise in violence.

He linked this resurgence to ongoing negotiations between bandits and authorities in neighbouring Kaduna State.

“The bandits are now attempting to force us into negotiations on their own terms, threatening even deadlier assaults if we refuse,” he stated.

Ayatu reaffirmed the local government’s firm opposition to negotiating with criminals, calling such agreements unreliable.

He argued that even when deals are reached, the armed groups rarely surrender their weapons.

He further suggested that bandits harbour resentment toward the people of Katsina because Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has refused to engage in peace talks with them.

According to Ayatu, some of the 1,000 freed individuals were released after ransoms were paid, while others were let go voluntarily. However, about 70 people remain in captivity.

He emphasized that lasting peace could only be achieved if all North-West governors adopted a unified approach to handling banditry.

Ayatu also commended Governor Radda for his commitment to campaign promises, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, agriculture, and water supply.

Despite these developments, security concerns persist, with residents calling for sustained military operations to curb the growing threat of banditry in the region.
