The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has advised Nigerians to confirm the identities of individuals claiming to be its officers, particularly those forcefully entering homes at night.
Dele Oyewale, the commission’s spokesperson, made this appeal in a video address to a group of young people.
He emphasized that many of those involved in unauthorized home invasions are not affiliated with the EFCC.
“It’s a carrot-and-stick approach. We have measures to handle such issues, but it’s important to note that in most cases, the intruders are not our officers,” Oyewale stated.
He further explained that some individuals impersonate EFCC officials to tarnish the agency’s reputation.
“I receive frequent reports about young people encountering individuals in suspicious outfits pretending to be from the EFCC. That’s simply not us,” he clarified.
Expressing concern over the rising trend of impersonation, Oyewale urged Nigerians, especially youths, to be vigilant when dealing with individuals claiming to be EFCC operatives.
“We have repeatedly issued press statements clarifying that these individuals do not represent us,” he said.
“If someone approaches you claiming to be from the EFCC, insist that they prove their identity. Unfortunately, in this country, people rarely question such claims.”
The EFCC’s warning comes amid increasing reports of fraudsters posing as operatives to deceive unsuspecting citizens.
