I will spend more time in Nigeria than ever before – El-Rufai dismisses exile rumours

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed concerns over an alleged plot to arrest and detain him, insisting that he has no plans to flee the country.

In a post on X on Tuesday, El-Rufai claimed he had received information suggesting efforts were being made to force him into exile.

He was responding to a message from his supporter, Imran Wakili, regarding the purported scheme.

Currently in Egypt, the former governor assured that he would be back in Nigeria before February 20, stating, “I will spend more time in Nigeria than ever before.”

El-Rufai accused his opponents of using threats and intimidation tactics through his associates, but he maintained that he would not be silenced.

He also revealed that he had put his academic and language-learning plans on hold, emphasizing that remaining quiet was no longer an option.

Reflecting on past incidents, he noted that he had been arrested and detained three times for voicing his opinions about previous administrations.

However, he remained resolute, asserting that political persecution was nothing new and that life continued beyond arrest or detention.

“For those who lose sleep whenever I am in Nigeria, take note that I intend to return in time for the launch of President IBB’s memoirs on February 20, in sha Allah,” he wrote.

El-Rufai, who has been at odds with allies of President Bola Tinubu and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), recently criticized the party’s leadership, arguing that its internal organs had not convened in the past two years, undermining internal democracy.
