Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has denied allegations suggesting he is responsible for the pregnancy of former Big Brother Naija contestant Nengi Rebecca Hampson.
Addressing the claims, Diri attributed the rumours to political adversaries seeking to tarnish his image.
The speculation gained traction after a well-known blogging platform alleged that the governor was involved in Nengi’s pregnancy.
However, Nengi has since debunked the claims on her social media platforms.
Reacting to the reports, Governor Diri expressed shock and disappointment, particularly because the false claims surfaced on the same day his administration marked its fifth anniversary.
Dr Kola Oredipe, the governor’s Director of New Media, also dismissed the allegations in a statement on social media, describing them as baseless.
“Nengi Rebecca Hampson has no personal relationship with Governor Diri. Unfortunately, those spreading fake news are uncomfortable with the governor’s rising political profile,” Oredipe stated.
He further criticized the misuse of social media in spreading misinformation, calling it a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the administration’s accomplishments.
“This is nothing but a distraction. While we were commissioning a newly constructed road in Yenagoa, social media propagandists were busy spreading falsehoods about the governor,” Oredipe added.
He reaffirmed that Governor Diri is a man of integrity and dignity, emphasizing that the allegations were politically motivated and completely unfounded.
