JUST IN: UCH medical students protest over 100 days of blackout, water shortage

Medical students at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, are currently demonstrating at the office of the institution’s Chief Medical Director (CMD) over the prolonged lack of electricity and water supply.

Amid the protest, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and UCH CMD, Jesse Otegbayo, are meeting with stakeholders in the hospital’s conference room to discuss possible solutions to the persistent power outage.

Reports indicate that the hospital has been without electricity since October 2024, marking over 100 days of blackout as of Monday.

The protesting students carried placards with messages such as “+100 Days of Darkness: Save UCH,” “Save ABH Hall; Save Falade Hall,” “Give Us Light,” “This Is Not How We Want To Live,” and “Medical School Is Hard Enough—Give Us Light.”

Former University of Ibadan Students’ Union President Samson Samuel and ex-Speaker Olamide Omotunde, who are both medical students, expressed their frustration, stating that several meetings with UCH management had failed to resolve the issue.

Samuel emphasized, “No electricity, no water. We will continue this protest until our demands are met.”

Omotunde added, “We protested at the State and Federal Secretariats in Ibadan on January 26, hoping for a resolution, but nothing changed. Now, after 100 days without power, we have no choice but to protest again.”

Further developments are expected.
