The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an urgent intervention following the accidental shooting of 27-year-old Tomiwa Oni Odofa at a police checkpoint in Itele, Ota, Ogun State, on July 24, 2024.

The incident occurred when police officers attempted to stop a Lexus vehicle for a routine check.

However, as the driver allegedly tried to flee, the officers opened fire, and a stray bullet struck Tomiwa, who was a passenger in the car.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Ogun State Police Command acted swiftly to ensure Tomiwa received urgent medical attention, with regular check-ups until her discharge.

He also confirmed that the officers involved had been identified and subjected to thorough disciplinary procedures to address their actions.

In a bid to further demonstrate the police force’s commitment to justice and accountability, the IGP has directed the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, to visit Tomiwa’s family in Ota to assess her recovery progress and provide additional support during this difficult time.

He also ordered that she undergo immediate psychological evaluation and therapy as part of her rehabilitation.

The police reassured the public of their dedication to professionalism and accountability, emphasizing that cases of misconduct would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
