Bello El-Rufai distances himself from father’s rift with gov Uba Sani

Bello el-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, has made it clear that he has no role in mediating the ongoing political tension between his father and the current governor, Uba Sani.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Bello, who serves as a member of the House of Representatives, addressed the situation.

The situation has seen both politicians at odds over financial management in the state.

The fallout escalated when, in June 2024, the Kaduna State Assembly recommended an investigation into el-Rufai.

The investigation was over allegations of public fund mismanagement and money laundering.

Several members of the former governor’s cabinet have also faced court charges related to corruption.

During the interview, Bello stated that while he supports accountability, investigations should not be used as a tool for political persecution.

“Probes are not a bad thing, but they should be conducted with fairness and not as a means to settle personal scores.

“If investigations are motivated by self-interest, divine justice will prevail,” he remarked.

Bello downplayed the severity of the rift between his father and Sani, suggesting that reports might have exaggerated the situation.

“It is unpleasant to witness disputes, even between adversaries. I prefer peace,” he said.

He likened the situation to personal relationships that sometimes dissolve despite efforts to maintain them.

When asked if he would intervene to reconcile the two politicians, Bello firmly dismissed the idea.

“That is not my responsibility. My focus is on serving the people of Kaduna North Constituency,” he stated.

Expressing admiration for his father, he added, “To me, there is no politician greater than Mallam Nasiru.

“He prioritizes his work, and he is the person I aspire to be like. A father remains a father.”

Bello also admitted that he was surprised by the public’s expectation for him to take a stance on the dispute.
