Gov Sule vows to prosecute officials over bribery in teacher recruitment

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has pledged to prosecute suspended officials of the state’s Teachers’ Service Commission (NSTSC) over allegations of bribery and illegal recruitment.

An investigative panel revealed that the officials accepted bribes from job seekers and recruited over 1,000 teachers beyond the approved number.

In response, Governor Sule suspended the commission’s chairman and board members in December 2024.

In a statement on Thursday, the governor’s social media assistant, Godwin Rimi, conveyed Sule’s position that the officials must be held legally accountable.

He stressed that security agencies would step in to ensure that victims of the fraud recover their money.

Sule disclosed that 3,277 teachers were recruited despite authorization for only 1,000, raising concerns about funding and placement.

He also criticized the hiring process for being meritless, resulting in the employment of unqualified teachers.

While assuring that those employed beyond the approved limit would receive payment, he confirmed that those without the necessary qualifications would have their appointments revoked.

He urged residents to focus on the educational impact of the issue rather than politicizing it.

The situation raises broader concerns about corruption in teacher recruitment and its potential consequences for education standards in the state.
