Deji Adeyanju urges western nations to impose visa ban on police PRO

Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has petitioned the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union, requesting a visa restriction on Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and his family.

In the petition, submitted through his law firm, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, he accused Adejobi of stifling free speech and misusing his position within the Nigeria Police Force to intimidate and silence government critics.

Dated February 4, 2025, the petition referenced multiple instances where Adejobi allegedly positioned criticism of the police as a punishable offence.

Adeyanju cited a tweet from March 29, 2023, in which Adejobi reportedly stated that “insulting police officers performing their lawful duties is a criminal act under Nigerian law.”

Adeyanju outlined several cases linked to Adejobi’s stance, including those of musician Habeeb Okikiola (Portable), nurse Olamide Thomas—who was arrested in December 2024 for criticizing the Inspector General of Police—and Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. Others mentioned include TikToker Destiny Ekhorutomwem, who was detained over allegations of cyberbullying, and Charles Uche Ihedioha, who was reportedly arrested over a social media comment.

The activist further alleged that Adejobi has consistently defended police brutality and justified excessive use of force by officers. He urged Western governments to take decisive action, asserting that imposing a visa ban would send a strong message against human rights violations and the suppression of free speech in Nigeria.
