Over 100 women raped, burned alive during Goma prison break – UN report reveals

Must read

According to a United Nations document obtained by the BBC, more than 100 female inmates were subjected to sexual violence and subsequently burned to death during a prison break in Goma, a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The incident occurred last Monday at Munzenze prison when hundreds of inmates escaped following an attack by M23 rebels, who were advancing through the city.

The UN report indicates that between 165 and 167 women were raped by male prisoners amid the chaos.

Many of the victims were later killed when the prison was set ablaze.

According to The BBC, they have not independently verified these accounts.

Goma, a city with a population exceeding one million, fell under the control of M23 rebels-allegedly supported by Rwanda after their swift offensive in eastern Congo.

The city descended into disorder, with reports of bodies scattered in the streets and missiles flying over residential areas.

Video footage from the prison break captured scenes of people fleeing as thick smoke billowed from the facility, accompanied by the sound of intense gunfire.
