The two labour unions of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have decided to suspend their planned strike and collaborate with the new management to advance President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the rail sector.
NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, announced this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to Opeifa, the unions reached this resolution after a meeting with management, where their concerns were thoroughly discussed. He described the meeting as productive, with both parties achieving a mutual understanding on key issues.
While some concerns raised by the unions were referred for further deliberation at the directorate level, Opeifa confirmed that the issue regarding medical personnel allowances had been resolved.
“The unions have reaffirmed their commitment to working with management and providing the necessary support to ensure efficient train services that will drive sector growth,” he stated.
He further emphasized that improved railway operations would contribute to reducing the cost of goods and services, aligning with President Tinubu’s economic objectives.
Expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, Opeifa assured the workers that their welfare remains a top priority under his leadership.
He pledged to enhance their working conditions and overall well-being.
Meanwhile, the National President of the National Union of Railway Workers (NUR), Innocent Ajiji, commended Opeifa for his openness and willingness to engage with the workers’ concerns.
