The decomposed remains of Hon. Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly who was abducted on Christmas Eve, have been discovered near the 2nd Niger Bridge.
A joint security team made the grim discovery following investigations into his disappearance.
Azuka was kidnapped at gunpoint on December 24, 2024, while travelling home along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha.
The abduction, which lasted less than five minutes, was carried out by armed assailants in a swift operation.
Azuka, a prominent figure in the Labour Party (LP), had recently reclaimed his legislative seat after a court ruling overturned the victory of Hon. Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was initially declared the winner of the 2023 election.
A security source confirmed to SaharaReporters that the suspects responsible for his abduction and murder were apprehended on Wednesday night.
The arrested individuals later led security operatives to the location where they had dumped his body.
“It is a tragic and heartbreaking loss,” the source stated. “May his soul rest in peace. Our condolences go to his family, the Obi of Onitsha, Dr. Alfred Achebe, and the entire Onitsha North Constituency 1.”
The killing comes amid rising insecurity in the region. Just two nights prior, on Tuesday, gunmen attempted another abduction along Awka Road in central Onitsha, unleashing a barrage of gunfire during the attack.
