KASU lecturers to begin indefinite strike over unpaid salaries

Must read

Academic staff at Kaduna State University (KASU) have announced plans to commence an indefinite strike on February 11, citing unresolved welfare issues.

The decision was communicated in a letter signed by ASUU-KASU Chairman Dr. Peter Adamu and Secretary Dr. Peter Waziri, addressed to the union’s national leadership for approval.

According to the letter, the Kaduna State Government has failed to address multiple grievances, including unpaid salaries for May to September 2022, 60% of September 2017 wages, and other withheld payments.

The union also raised concerns over the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances from 2015 to 2020, outstanding Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) payments from 2016 to 2023, and unremitted pensions from 2009 to 2019.

Additionally, they cited unpaid promotion arrears (2019–2023) and the absence of Group Life Insurance coverage for deceased academic staff since 2020.

ASUU-KASU recalled that they had met with Governor Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, where he pledged to settle the outstanding entitlements.

A follow-up letter was sent on August 20, 2024, through the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Mohammed Bello, reminding the governor of his commitment to a phased payment plan.

With no action taken, the lecturers have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike until their demands are met.
