The Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has commenced an indefinite strike in seven out of the state’s 13 local government areas due to prolonged salary delays.
The affected councils include Edda, Ebonyi, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, Ivo, and Ohaukwu, where teachers have reportedly gone months without pay.
The union has urged its members in these areas to fully comply with the strike directive.
In a statement released in Abakaliki, the state capital, the union’s secretary, Comrade Bassey Asuquo, explained that the decision followed a thorough assessment of salary payments by local government chairmen.
“After reviewing the situation as of February 5, 2025, we acknowledge that some local governments have settled outstanding payments.
“However, several others have failed to fulfil their obligations, prompting this industrial action,” Asuquo stated.
The strike, set to take effect from 12:00 am on Thursday, February 6, 2025, will include picketing and strict enforcement measures to ensure full compliance among members in the affected areas.
Asuquo emphasized that the union would not back down until the owed salaries were fully paid, calling on teachers to stand firm and support the strike until their demands were met.
