AEPB engages 40 contractors to maintain cleanliness in Abuja

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has engaged 40 contractors to ensure the cleanliness of the Federal Capital City.

AEPB Director, Osilama Braimah, made this known in an interview in Abuja on Wednesday, emphasizing that all contractors have been fully paid, with no outstanding debts.

He explained that the board oversees waste management and sanitation in major districts such as Maitama, Asokoro, Garki, Guzape, Katampe, Wuse, Mabushi, Wuye, and other central areas.

Additional locations under AEPB’s jurisdiction include the Airport Road up to Bill Clinton Drive, the airport vicinity, the Central Business District, and the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway leading to the Karu axis.

Beyond waste disposal, AEPB is also responsible for clearing beggars off the streets, maintaining pedestrian bridges to prevent illegal trading, managing the city’s sewage system, and overseeing sewage treatment plants in Wupa, Guzape, Katampe, and Apo.

The agency also enforces environmental regulations and mitigates ecological degradation.

Braimah stated that each of the 40 contractors has designated areas for waste evacuation.

However, when contractors struggle to manage the high volume of refuse, AEPB steps in to assist.

“We have our own team that intervenes when necessary. If a contractor fails to fulfill their task, we take over and deduct the cost of our intervention from their payment,” he explained.

He highlighted that contractors conduct routine waste evacuations every two weeks, helping to maintain the city’s cleanliness.

However, he clarified that AEPB’s jurisdiction does not extend to all satellite towns and area councils, except for the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Regarding noise pollution, Braimah noted that AEPB addresses disturbances from nightclubs, residential areas, and public spaces but does not regulate noise from moving vehicles or motorcycles.
