On the final day of session, February 5, 2025, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte.
According to sources within the House, 153 congressmen signed the impeachment complaint, which is set to be officially presented in the plenary session on Wednesday.
As per the law, only 101 signatures were required for the House to pass the complaint to the Senate, where Duterte will face trial.
The impeachment stems from three allegations: misuse of public funds, culpable violation of the constitution, and betrayal of public trust.
Meanwhile, the Senate Secretary General has instructed the Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau (PRIB) to prepare for the potential transmittal of the impeachment complaints at 7 PM tonight.
Following this, senators will review the complaints to decide on whether to remove the Vice President from office.
However, Senate President Francis Escudero has denied any preparation for the impeachment process.
In response to the PRIB’s announcement, Escudero emphasized that the Senate “cannot and will not assume anything until and unless it becomes official.”
He further criticized the remarks, suggesting that an “over-eager staff” issued them without his approval and that the statements were neither appropriate nor official.
