Suspected herdsmen attack Ebonyi community, leave many dead, injured

Must read

A devastating attack reportedly carried out by suspected herdsmen has left numerous residents dead and several others injured in Amegu Nkalaha, located in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The exact number of casualties remains unclear as authorities continue recovery efforts.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers stormed the community armed with cutlasses and firearms, killing residents and setting houses ablaze.

AFRIPOST gathered that ongoing evacuations have made it difficult to confirm the full extent of the damage and fatalities.

The Chairman of Ishielu LGA, Mrs Ifeoma Agwu, confirmed that bodies were still being recovered and transported to the mortuary.

“We are currently evacuating the victims’ bodies. I can’t provide detailed information at this moment, but more updates will follow,” she stated.

A community member, Professor Ndubuisi Idenyi, who previously chaired the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Ebonyi State University, also verified the incident.

“My village, Amegu Nkalaha, was attacked today. Many lives have been lost, and homes burned down. It’s truly a black Sunday,” he lamented.

According to Prof. Idenyi, the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, with an undetermined number of fatalities and injuries.

“We are still searching for and recovering bodies, especially from farms where some victims were found,” he added.

When contacted, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated he was unaware of the incident but assured that he would provide updates once more information becomes available.
