Survivor of Abuja school explosion arrested after hospital discharge

The Nigerian police have detained Abba Saidu, a survivor of the recent explosion at the Almajiri Tsangaya Modern School in Kachibagi, Kubwa, Abuja.

Saidu was arrested shortly after being discharged from the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained in the blast.

AFRIPOST reported that the explosion, which took place at Tsangayar Sani Uthman Islamic School in Bwari Area Council, was triggered by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly brought in by three individuals from Katsina posing as Islamic teachers.

The blast claimed the lives of two people, including a young boy whose body was found dismembered, while another person was critically injured.

Following initial treatment at Kubwa General Hospital, Saidu was transferred to the teaching hospital in Gwagwalada due to the severity of his condition.

His elder brother, Salisu Dangu, revealed that police officers had been monitoring Saidu during his hospitalization.

“I stayed with him for a few days before asking my brother, Nura, to take over. Later, I was informed that the police had taken him to their Life Camp office and then moved him to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID),” Dangu told Daily Trust.

Dangu voiced concerns over Saidu’s continued detention, noting that he has been in police custody for nearly two weeks.

Saidu reportedly claimed that the explosion occurred when one of the deceased victims, Harisu Lawan, discovered the device while searching for sweet potatoes on a nearby farm.

Meanwhile, Iliya Shuaibu, the father of another injured victim, fauziyya Ilyasu, criticized the police’s response to the incident.

He also confirmed that the school’s proprietor, Adamu Hashimu, has been in police custody since the explosion.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding Saidu’s arrest or the status of the ongoing investigation.
