The Plateau state government has confirmed a new outbreak of suspected Lassa fever, resulting in two deaths and one person currently receiving medical care.

This was disclosed over the weekend by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, during a press briefing in Jos, the state capital.

According to Shurkuk, three cases of Lassa fever have been recorded—two in Kanam Local Government Area and one in Shendam LGA.

He revealed that one patient passed away in Shendam, while the second fatality occurred at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi. The third patient is undergoing treatment.

Dr. Shurkuk noted that the state government is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.

“Upon receiving reports of the outbreak, a rapid response team was deployed to the affected areas for immediate assessment and public health education,” he said.

He further stated that all individuals identified through contact tracing have tested negative for the virus.

The commissioner urged residents to maintain proper personal and environmental hygiene, stressing that it remains the most effective measure to curb the spread of Lassa fever.
