The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold a crucial meeting today to determine the fate of former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
The emergency session, scheduled to take place at Lagos House Marina, follows an ongoing leadership crisis within the state legislature.
As the highest decision-making body of the Lagos APC, the GAC—chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Tinubu as its lifetime patron—plays a key role in resolving internal party disputes. Its resolutions are often binding on party members.
One of the primary issues on the agenda is the controversial removal of Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. On January 13, 2025, 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted to oust him in absentia, citing allegations of financial mismanagement, misconduct, and authoritarian leadership. His deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was subsequently installed as the new Speaker.
However, Obasa’s removal has sparked mixed reactions within the party, with some GAC members questioning the legality of the process. Muraina Taiwo, a representative from Isolo Constituency, criticized the lawmakers for reconvening during recess to effect the removal.
Similarly, Senator Anthony Adefuye has described the impeachment as unlawful, while another GAC member, Musiliu Obanikoro, dismissed Adefuye’s claims as baseless, calling his remarks “careless.”
The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to play a significant role in determining the political future of the embattled former Speaker and could influence the power dynamics within the Lagos APC.
