The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has raised concerns over an alleged threat to peace and security following the endorsement of Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary by PDP governors.
In a petition dated February 1, 2025, addressed to the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeal, Anyanwu accused the governors of creating political instability by pushing for the enforcement of a court ruling that is still under legal contest.
Anyanwu referenced a communiqué issued by the PDP Governors Forum advising the National Working Committee (NWC) to implement a recent Enugu Court of Appeal judgment, which upheld Udeh-Okoye’s nomination.
However, he argued that an appeal has already been filed at the Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeal in Abuja has instructed all parties to maintain the status quo pending the final determination of the case.
He warned that enforcing the governors’ recommendation would contradict the court’s directive and could lead to serious political unrest.
The petition further alleged that Udeh-Okoye and his supporters stormed the PDP National Secretariat with hired thugs on January 29, 2025, disrupting a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting.
Anyanwu described this act as unlawful and a direct assault on the judiciary and the rule of law.
Highlighting the legal implications, Anyanwu urged security agencies to prevent any attempt by the NWC to enforce the governors’ directive, stressing that such a move would amount to defying an ongoing legal process.
He insisted that, until a final court ruling is issued, he remains the legally recognized National Secretary of the PDP.
Anyanwu also cautioned all parties involved to adhere strictly to the rule of law to avoid political unrest.
The petition concluded with an appeal to security agencies to take necessary steps to prevent a crisis and ensure that the PDP leadership respects ongoing court proceedings.
