A fierce confrontation broke out on Friday at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, between factions loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The altercation triggered sporadic gunfire around the secretariat, situated along the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway.
Witness accounts conflict on the source of the gunshots—some attributing them to security operatives stationed at the site since a court ruling ousted the Aaron Chukwuemeka-led party leadership, while others claim political thugs were responsible.
The violence is rooted in an ongoing rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, reportedly linked to a power struggle over political dominance in the state.
Friday’s incident unfolded when supporters of Governor Fubara, previously evicted from the party office following the court’s decision, attempted to reclaim the premises.
Their efforts were met with strong resistance from Wike’s loyalists, resulting in a heated clash that quickly escalated into chaos.
